St. Regis Princeville, Lenora + Michael
I can’t imagine a more amazing venue than the St. Regis Princeville on Kauai. I’ve always been a lover of Starwood Hotels, especially the Luxury Collection and St. Regis, so this was a real treat.
Lenora and Michael chose a gorgeous yet understated color scheme for their event. The trees were dripping with orchids and the weather was absolutely unbelieveable. I truly felt honored to be a part of their wedding. The sunset was it's usual...amazing and unforgettable. Kauai might just be my new favorite spot to shoot.
A big thanks to all the wedding planners at the St. Regis, Nesli Gacek, Officiant Kelvin Ho, incredibly talented harpist Anela Lauren and last but certainly not least for Florals is Martin Roberts. (Did you see those orchids hanging from the trees?? LOVED IT.)

I really enjoy getting to know people. Not in like a who, what, where, how type of way, but, in a genuine tell me about who you are, and what makes you happy, and laugh kind of way. I like getting to know people, because I genuinely am interested in who they are as a person and not as a client.
When we can get to know each other, taking photos becomes easy. I can have fun with my clients, incorporate the things that mean a lot to them, and make taking photos an experience about them and their interest.
Angela and Raymond are one such couple that I really enjoyed getting to know on a personal level before, during and after their engagement session in Honolulu. I’m excited to be documenting their wedding in Oahu at The Royal Hawaiian Hotel early next year.

Mandy+Curt are super fun. They know how to relax and enjoy life. The two have a lot going for them, for starters, they got engaged while on a backpacking trip in Italy. Upon their return, was a move to Southern California, which got them closer to the beach lifestyle they both love. All the plans seem to be coming together for these two, and I am excited for their upcoming Maui wedding this fall.
The first order of business, for this duo, was a trip to Maui to scout a few vendors, surf, and pretty much take a little break from busy work back home. It was only fitting since we will be shooting their wedding, that we have a meetup, and shoot some relaxed engagement session photos. During the shoot, Mandy let me know that the two of them love photos, but all the photos are of the handheld point and shoot type. I let her know that we would get some great images, and we could just have some fun getting to know each other, and make them feel comfortable with the camera in the process.
Below are a few shots from the afternoon session.

A few weeks back, I got to spend some time hanging out with Jeanne & Craig. They were past clients, who were married in Maui, Hawaii. I had the amazing privilege to photograph their wedding at the Four Seasons Resort Wailea back in November. I had a great time at their wedding, and we really made a great connection in Maui. After the wedding, Jeanne informed me that Craig's mom was going to throw a reception in San Francisco, and she was excited to see if I could join them and photograph the event. It took all of 5 seconds to look at my schedule, clear a few things, and book tickets!
What we decided was that I could come into San Francisco a few days early, we could meet up, reconnect, shot some photos around the city, enjoy dinner, and catch up on how wonderful life has been since the wedding in Maui. Craig had suggested we should shoot over on the west end of the city, maybe starting off near the Palace of Fine Arts. We could then cruise by Fort Mason and shoot by the Golden Gate Bridge. This sounded like a great idea to me and our photo session began. After the shoot, we had dinner near the ocean, and talked about how much fun it was to see each other again.
I feel so honored that clients select me to photograph their weddings. That my clients, allow me to join them on one of the most significant days in their lives. The friendships I have made with my clients over the years is special, and I always feel so blessed to work with some of the most generous, kind, and wonderful people. It's clients like Jeanne & Criag, and the countless others, that have been so amazing to work with. It brings me joy, to wake up every day and give 100% of my energy, focus, and attention to making sure my clients have the best photography experience I can give.
Below is a small sample of images from the afternoon. The Reception images will be in Part 2.

I feel honored to shoot portrait sessions of some wonderful families here in Maui. The Albert Family is no exception. Brad and Amy are great clients but even better friends, and that relationship allows photographs to look so natural and relaxed. In addition it doesn't hurt that their son, two year old Tosh, is so fun and animated in front of the camera and off! The Alberts are also amazing because they are helping the island of Maui. Brad is one of the owners of Rising Sun Solar which introduces and installs homes and businesses to clean solar power. Go Alberts!

Here are some of my favorites of the Alberts. enjoy!

Life around Maui in the winter time is interesting, we get a mixture of cooler more northerly weather, mixed with wind from the north east, and them some tropical rain. On the North Shore of Maui this weather pattern hangs out for about 3 months out of the year, because of this perfect storm of sorts, Maui, over the past 20 years has become a meca for surfing and windsurfing.
About 12 years ago a few surfers( Gerry Lopez, Laird Hamilton and Derrick Doener) came over to Maui in search of bigger waves to ride during the winter months. At the time Waimea Bay on Oahu's North Shore had been the the wave which all waves were measured. On a good day Waimea would break around 25 ft. Surfers would contemplate paddling out in the large surf knowing that a wave of the size could easy end your surfing season with one wrong move, or worse end your surf program permanently.
What Gerry Lopez found next was a freak of a wave here in Maui. The wave the surfers nicknamed "Jaws" only begun to break at 25 feet. Gerry made the call to Laird and the boys to come to Maui and take a look at this so called monster wave. Gerry told the others they might want to stick around for the winter just to see what it could do with the right conditions.
What happened next changed the surfing world and Modern Big Wave Riding was born. Surfers now, with assistance of powerful jet skiis, tow surfers into waves that are to big to physically paddle into. Now keep in mind that waves of this size only happen maybe a few times a year, the last time Jaws broke with any "Good Size" was the winter of 2004-2005 when 40-50ft waves created some amazingly large waves.
Fast forward to December 6th 2009. We started getting reports that a very large swell was headed straight for the Hawaiian Islands. The news was reporting a major high surf advisory, and a caution was issued for all beach areas around the Hawaiian Islands. Sunday night there was so much nervous energy around town, it was definitely the conversation around the dinner table.
At about 2am Monday December 7th I was woken up to what sounded like a light thunder, the crashing sounds coming about every 15 to 20 seconds. (As a note, I live just up the road from Jaws) I stayed awake for about 2 hours listening to the sound get stronger and stronger. By 6am I was up and packing photo gear ready to see what the conditions looked like. What I saw at first light was one of the most amazing feats of mother nature's power, the north shore of Maui was in direct path of 30-40 foot waves!
By Tuesday Deccember 8th the waves were holding at about 30-40 ft. We decided to pack gear and head out to the break on a friends boat to get a very up close, and personable view of the waves. About a 45 minute boat ride out to the break, through 20-25 foot swell made for a interesting commute to work. Once we got to the break I unpacked my camera gear and set myself up to capture the action of surfers towing into monster waves. Being an active member in the surfing community here in Maui, I knew a lot of the surfers out in the lineup. Laird Hamilton, Dave Kalama, Archie, Kaleo, Kiva, most of the boys were well on there way to catching some of the biggest waves of their lives. To surfers like Laird, and Dave who have surfed this wave for over 10 years, the control and confidence that they posses when riding waves that are taller than a 4 story building is very impressive.
Throughout this adventure I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to see such a impressive display of power and beauty. I look forward to the next big day.
Below are some shots from my boat time at Jaws. enjoy!
